Two new studies are out that conclude that heavy pot smokers may have a greater risk of chronic lung disease than cigarette smokers. One study found a higher risk of lung cancer for those who smoked one joint a day than people who smoked 20 cigarettes a day. The second study found that emphysema occurs a shocking 20 years earlier in pot smokers. The studies appear in the European Respiratory Journal and the publication, Respirology. The increased risk may be due to the fact that marijuana smokers inhale more deeply and hold the smoke in their lungs longer, which increases the amount of carbon monoxide.
