The U.S. is Not Number One

Category: General Date: 01/12/2008

As the birthplace of McDonald's and Burger King, you'd think Americans would reign supreme when it comes to fast food. This new bit of information may surprise you. The U.S. is not the country most addicted to fast food. Actually, it's the U.K., followed closely by the U.S., according to a new survey. The survey polled 9,000 people in 13 nations, from Brazil to Australia, about global obesity and found vast variations in attitudes toward food and weight. For example, many French people weight themselves every day, while Singaporeans are the least likely to get on the scale. About 40 percent of those polled blamed the growing world obesity problem on food; 18 percent cite lack of exercise; 13 percent blame the individual and 11 percent blame genetics, but people in the U.S. and U.K. were most likely to cite "no self discipline" as the leading factor in obesity. Saudi Arabians and those from the United Arab Emirates were among the world's top consumers of low-fat food products, meal replacements and food supplements, and were most interested in weight-loss classes, gym memberships and home exercise equipment.
